Not Rocket Science

JB

With less than two weeks left in the presidential campaign, it now looks as if Kerry will win all of the states Al Gore won plus New Hampsire. This gives him 264. If nothing else happens, Bush wins the Presidency, 274-264. To win the Presidency Kerry needs to win either Ohio (20 electoral votes) or Florida (27 electoral votes).

It's as simple as that.

Could something happen to change all of these calculations? Of course, anything is possible. But right now I would spend most of my time campaigning in Ohio and Florida, with occasional forays into Pennsylvania.

Comments:

I assume by "state" you also mean DC? For those confused, note that re-districting lead to some electoral vote changes in a few key states.

I see also that the website predicts Kerry will receive over 290 electoral votes. Shall see.

If, as you say, Kerry gets all of the "Gore states" plus New Hampshire, then it would be 274-264.

BUT, if Kerry also gets West Virginia, it would be a tie: 269-269.

A new poll out today shows WV in a statistical dead heat, with 5% undecided. The majority of undecideds historically "break" for the challenger rather than the incumbent, so according to this new poll, WV going for Kerry is still a definite possibility.
