The "hold" is relaxed

Sandy Levinson

This just in: "Mr. Shelby announced Monday evening that he would reverse course on most of the 70 nominees and allow their confirmations to proceed." So maybe I was wrong about bullies being impervious to being shamed, though I wonder if he is responding more to imprecations from Mitch McConnell that the publicity is not in fact good for the Republicans. What remains to be seen is whether any of Shelby's Republican colleagues will place holds in some of the nominees. If each Republican placed "only" two holds, that would cover the entire group. Or will the first move toward "bi-partisanship" be allowing President Obama in fact to complete his Administration only a year after Inauguration?
