Can Education or Information Shortcuts Overcome Political Ignorance?
Ilya Somin
Comments:
How about just advocating a government limited to those duties specified in the Constitution, simplifying everything by letting everyone live their own lives and teaching old-fashioned Civics in our public schools so students can learn about our country's history and how it's supposed to be run.
The rat's nest of a bureaucracy we've allowed to grow like a cancer needs to be completely dismantled.
"Studies show that voters repeatedly reward and punish political leaders for events they have little control over, particularly short-term economic trends."
This statement is inextricably connected to neoclassical illusion. It is a fundamental attribution error to imply that the troughs and peaks of the business cycle are endogenous to the economy and unrelated to public policy. I admit I am jumping to conclusions but I would prefer that Professor Somin announce at the beginning that his analysis flows but the assumption of competent markets.
Modern society requires some bureaucracy for a society of 300M, so "completely dismantling" sounds impractical to me.
Okay, lets dismantle everything with public sector unions the first to go and then only amend the Constitution when it's deemed necessary for the public weal.
That should eliminate almost all the bureaucracy aka cronyism which is what passes for government in today's world. HELP: Why are we being plagued with proving we are not a robot when we are already signed in and recognized.
I work an hour from home. I am so glad that motion in the physical world is nearly without cost. Otherwise I would be tired after my commute. Oh wait, I should be able to readjust my position in the free market and secure alternative employment closer to home. Given the rationality and self-correction of markets I am sure that I have an accurate view of my comparative futures in the two job scenarios before me. I am such an astute judge of private sector options but am largely ignorant about public policy.
And... "moving costs can be reduced by decentralizing to lower levels of government or to the private sector, and are in any case declining thanks to modern technology." Right now I am a citizen of the free market republic of Southeastern Silver Spring which I will leave the moment pollution becomes unbearable.
