Married to a Secessionist! Say It Ain't So, First Dude!

JB

The director of Division of Elections in Alaska now reports that Sarah Palin's husband Todd, aka "the First Dude," was a registered member of the Alaska Independent Party between 1995 and 2002, except for a brief period of a few months when his party affiliation was undeclared. In 2002, Sarah Palin began her run for lieutenant governor.

One can only imagine the coverage on FOX News if Michelle Obama had been a member of a party that sought to secede from the United States. After all, if you can't trust the wife to put America first, how can you trust the husband? And vice versa.

As Sean Hannity would say: Why does Sarah Palin's husband hate America?

Comments:

Minor point:

You call it the "Alaska Independent Party." Do you mean the "Alaskan Independence Party"?

It's a minor inflection, but a important difference in tone. I don't think they're merely "independent." They want "independence."

Is this a retraction of the smear earlier?

I love how Jack thinks he can deflect the attacks on "civilians" (as Obama calls them) by imagining that his political opponents would do just as bad as him. Apparently the only thing as bad as FoxNews is Jack Balkin. High standards you set for yourself there Jack.

Thomas,

What smear? JB cited a news account. He quoted it accurately. He didn't make it up. It wasn't insanely implausible. Whether she was a member seems to be still an open question. She has evidently always been a registered Republican, but AIP members also report her as a member. What exactly do you think that JB should retract?

He didn't cite a news account, he repeated it. And if there's anything we know after three days, it's that news accounts reporting an attack on Palin are unlikely to be reliable.

This "open question" bit is crap.

Thomas,

Wrong again. Actually the post contains a cite as well as a summary of the information.

That's what that underline (or whatever presents in your browser -- I'm guessing IE) means, in case you didn't know.

That is one of the more artfully crafted Trojan horses I have observed. "God damn America!" and "God damn the American government!," have a certain sort of superficial similarity, but I imagine thoughtful sorts could parse them to advantage.

c2h50h, he didn't simply cite the smear, he repeated it. Jack Balkin is no different from the idiot emailing the "Obama is a Muslim" story. With one exception: the morons sending around the stories about Obama haven't been so despicable as to attack Obama's children.

Boy, the Palin nomination, the repercussons, and the defence thereof, have really brought the nuts out of the woodwork.

My, my, my, how they take offence that someone should actually print facts about Palin and her family. Thomas has yet to show that anything said here is inaccurate.

As for the "children" persiflage, I know it's right there in the RNC/Hannity/Limbaugh "talking points", but I just about barfed while driving to the airport today, hearing Limbaugh exude that nonsense ... after what Limbaugh did to Chelsea Clinton....

Cheers,

To even be affiliated with a group that wants a state to secede from the United States of America is un-American, un-patriotic, and destructive to our union. It takes a real partisan person not to realize this. Sarah Palin was, at the minimum, celebratory about her deep affiliation with the Alaskan Independence Party (as her videotaped speech at their convention makes clear). Professor Balkin points out a very real double standard of the Republican party. They are famous for calling others un-patriotic and un-American. Now when a REALLY un-patriotic and almost treasonous affiliation by a politician is exposed they fail to point out the truly obvious.

I did not expect this blawg to descend to the level of the Kos Kidz. Shame on you Jack.

You Dems must be absolutely terrified of Governor Palin.

arne, I'm sure Jack is heartened by the comparison to Limbaugh.

In the "They know not what they do" category,Politico.com has an interesting piece discussing how Palin and the Dem attacks upon her have rallied the social conservatives who were previously thinking about sitting this election out because McCain is not one of them.

By all means, keep it up folks...

Coming from a fascist propaganda spewing scumbag like you, this comment is pretty damned funny...

I figured the social conservatives would be motivated by the fact that Obama is a secret muslim terrorist? That wasn't enough?

I didn't compare Prof. Balkin to Limbaugh. I just pointed out that you RWers have a very curious scotoma when it comes to seeing malice. You're in no place to talk about it. Period.

Cheers,

Actually, rallying the social conservatives is a feature, not a bug, for liberals on this issue.

You see, Sarah Palin isn't qualified to be President and makes McCain unelectable. So the last thing we want is for him to dump her from the ticket.

So rallying the religious right to the point where he feels he can't dump her from the ticket ensures an Obama victory.

Whiner. These Rethuglican chicken-hawks just luuuuuuvvv to play the "victimhood" game....

You Dems must be absolutely terrified of Governor Palin.

No. We'd like you folks to keep her as your veep candidate. Nothing like a RW nutcase to liven the ticket.... :-)

Rallying the 28% (and falling) dead-enders ain't gonna help you. And I'd note, once again, the whinyness. "Those big bad Democrats are piiiiccckkkinngg on her. Wauugghh!!!!"

Cheers,

Oh, we are, Bart. We are.
