Apparently George W. Bush (whose tenure in the White House still has 670 days to go) has called Alberto Gonzales to reaffirm his full support for the beleagured Attorney General. "Heck of a job, amigo." Given what happened after similar reaffirmations of support were offered only a week before the November election for Donald Rumsfeld, I suspect that the Attorney General should be calling a Houston realtor and seeing if his old law firm, Vinson & Elkins, has a corner office waiting for him (not to mention hiring a lawyer to defend himself against potential charges of lying to Congress--remember Richard Helms and Eliot Abrams?). But, presumably, the ever-loyal AG can look forward to receiving a Medal of Freedom for his services to George W. Bush (even if not to America). Posted

Gonzalez has been one of the least intellectually impressive AGs in recent memory. Maybe Bush doesn't like to have anyone around him who is smarter than he is.
Given the President's limited regard for established law and executive limitations, a pardon and the Medal of Freedom seem to be the new equivalent of a gold watch at retirement. There may be some Piper needing to be paid for these transgressions, but as someone once said, "The race does not always go to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, but that IS the way to bet.
