Defining "Humanely" Down, Part II
Marty Lederman
On February 7, 2002, the President issued a directive requiring the Armed Forces to treat al Qaeda and Taliban detainees "humanely." In several previous posts here (including this one and the posts linked therein), I've noted that this directive does not apply to the CIA, and that therefore the CIA almost certainly has been authorized to engage in conduct against detainees that is not, on anyone's view, "humane."
Comments:
If a captured member of the US Armed Forces was discovered to be given such 'humane' treatment-there would no end to the screams from the rabid-right blogosphere as well as from governmental leaders from the President on down.
Doesn't this Administration & its faithful suporters realize that the Geneva Convention was designed to prevent members of the US military from abuse? What is worse is the loss of US legal ideals and democratic ideals that allow for moral persuasion of other countries/leaders. For the supposedly 'christian' beliefs held by this President-the golden rule seems to have fallen by the roadside.
You think it's inhumane to shave a Muslim's beard, yet you think that it's humane to take a person's house and give it to a corporation.
